Ukraine war is already having significant impact on international trade, warns ParcelHero

The international delivery expert ParcelHero says freight transport services to Ukraine are at a virtual stop, and many services to Russia have been suspended. It warns the costs of the conflict will impact on UK companies, even if they have no business in Eastern Europe.

ParcelHero’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks M.I.L.T., says: ‘”Putin’s War” as it is being called in Europe, will certainly harm both Russia and the Ukraine economically, but its impact is also already being felt by UK businesses.

‘The invasion has had an immediate economic impact on Russia, which doubled its interest rate to 20% on Monday after the rouble sank by as much as 30%, before settling back down to 20%. However, UK international businesses, both large and small, are also counting the cost.

‘Most international parcel operators suspended services to the Ukraine from 24 February and major couriers such as UPS, FedEx and TNT have also suspended international services to Russia. Most couriers are now returning items already in transit to the sender where possible.

‘How much could all this cost UK businesses? It’s too early to tell but, during the far smaller Ukraine conflict of 2014, a report by the Vienna Institute of International Economic Studies said Germany lost around £2.51bn (EUR 3 billion), followed by Italy, which lost around £1.17bn (EUR 1.4 billion). France, Great Britain and Poland each lost around £0.67bn (EUR 0.8bn). The current conflict is on a far larger scale and the economic sanctions imposed on Russia are far more severe, so expect these numbers to be the tip of the iceberg. ‘In common with all other UK international courier service providers, ParcelHero has currently suspended booking services to Ukraine.

Direct flights resume between Innsbruck and Frankfurt

The introduction of the winter 21/22 flight schedule brought with it the end of direct flights between Innsbruck and Frankfurt.

However, flights have finally resumed between Innsbruck Airport and Frankfurt, one of the world’s busiest air-traffic hubs. The first arrival from Frankfurt landed right on time at 17:45, on May 2, in Innsbruck to much celebration.

Marco Pernetta, Chief Executive Officer of Innsbruck Airport, was on hand together with Paolo Sgaramarella, Chief Commercial Officer of Air Dolomiti, and representatives from politics, business and tourism to welcome the Embraer 195 on its arrival from Frankfurt. The crew and passengers on board the flight operated by Air Dolomiti were treated to a special welcome as they touched down in Innsbruck.

For Marco Pernetta the resumption of direct flights between Innsbruck and Frankfurt is an important step: “We are now finally able to offer our passengers and guests direct flights to and from Frankfurt, one of the world’s most important international airports. It is a particular pleasure that this route is being operated by a renowned airline like Air-Dolomiti, which is a subsidiary of Lufthansa.”

Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening: First cross-border Ski World Cup Race in history

The World Cup races in Zermatt/Cervinia on 29/30 October and 5/6 November 2022 will be the season opener for speed athletes.

The first cross-border races in the history of the Ski World Cup will be held on the “Gran Becca” course. You’ve probably heard of package delivery by moped, robot, or bicycle, but what about a delivery on skis?

Located in Styria, Austria, at an elevation of 1,600 to 2,000 meters (5,200 to 6,500 feet), Tauplitz Mountain Village is a remote, mountainous region surrounded by six pristine natural lakes. The area is the largest lake plateau in Central Europe, and visitors from around the world flock to the region to enjoy the stunning vistas, incredible ski slopes, and local Austrian hospitality.

During the winter and spring months, Tauplitz Mountain Village receives significant snowfall, creating the ideal environment for avid skiers. The consistent snowfall can also mean challenging road conditions for locals to access everyday necessities, whether those be kitchen staples or ski pants, winter gloves or laptop chargers.

Snow or shine, Tauplitz Mountain Village is one of the many unique locations around the globe where Amazon delivers to serve customers with the convenience and speed that they expect. During the months when snow covers the mountain roads, local postal carrier Helmut Edelmaier—known as Heli—has his own unique way of delivering to customers.

Instead of using a traditional delivery van, Edelmaier embarks on his delivery route by skis—and he delivers packages directly to customers’ doorsteps. Edelmaier has been delivering letters, newspapers, and Amazon packages on skis for the past 15 years, from January to April, to the 15 hotels and more than 100 private mountain cabins in the area.

“I love being out in nature. Being able to work up here on the Tauplitz Mountain Village is wonderful,” Edelmaier said.
